A forklift may be needed when the shipment cannot be handled safely using the agreed tail lift, pallet truck or dock arrangement. The decision depends on the complete load, lifting access and vehicle, not just whether the goods are on a pallet.
Situations needing particular attention
- Heavy units beyond the proposed handling equipment’s capacity.
- Long or wide goods that do not fit a tail-lift platform.
- Cargo requiring side loading into the vehicle.
- Machinery needing controlled lifting from specified points.
- Sites where the vehicle and loading area have no suitable dock connection.
Match the forklift to the actual load
The equipment’s suitability depends on capacity at the relevant load centre, fork length, lifting height and ground conditions. A nominal capacity number alone is not a complete lifting plan. The site should provide competent operators and equipment suited to the task.
If the cargo has a special frame or concealed centre of gravity, supply the manufacturer’s handling information. Do not assume any accessible gap is an approved fork pocket.
Check both ends of the route
A shipper having a forklift does not establish how the recipient will unload. Confirm the delivery equipment separately before collection, especially for machinery or dense pallets of metal products.
What to send with your enquiry
Include dimensions, gross weight, photographs and available loading equipment at each address. State whether side, rear or overhead access is needed. If no equipment is available, tell the manager before accepting a quotation.
