Select packaging materials for the product, its weight and the handling method. A good-looking wrapped pallet is not necessarily well protected. Each material should perform a defined role within the complete packaging system.

Material or componentTypical role to assess
Carton or rigid enclosureOuter protection and containment
Inserts, foam or other cushioningSupporting vulnerable parts and limiting internal movement
Edge and corner protectorsProtecting contact points and distributing restraint pressure
Strapping or engineered restraintSecuring appropriate loads against movement
Stretch filmUnitising suitable goods and providing surface protection
Pallet or skidSupporting the cargo and enabling mechanical handling

Avoid substitutions that change performance

A softer material may not provide the compression resistance of a rigid support. A thinner carton may be unsuitable for the same weight. Reused packaging should be checked for damage, moisture and loss of strength.

Ask the packaging supplier about suitability for the actual goods and transport conditions. Heavy machines and delicate instruments often need more specific advice than an ordinary carton shipment.

Consider the route and environment

A journey involving terminals or a sea connection may require different protection from a short direct movement. Identify moisture-sensitive products and check whether wood packaging rules apply to the destination.

Plan quantities after the packing method is settled

Do not buy materials solely from a generic checklist. Determine how the product will be supported, protected, secured and labelled, then select the materials needed for that method.
