Goods should normally be supported within the pallet’s footprint. Overhang exposes edges and components to contact and can leave the load insufficiently supported. If the product is larger than the base, discuss a suitable larger pallet or purpose-built support before shipping.
Why overhang matters
Freight handling is planned around the outside dimensions of the unit. A projecting part may be struck even when the pallet itself fits neatly between other goods. Unsupported cartons can deform, while a heavy projection can affect balance.
Wrapping an exposed edge does not create the structural support of a correctly sized base.
Record the actual dimensions
If the complete unit extends beyond a 120 × 80 cm pallet, report its greatest outside length and width. The quotation must use the space occupied by the goods and protection, not just the pallet format.
For example, a protected component measuring 135 cm along one side is not a 120 cm shipment simply because it sits on a standard pallet. Its base and handling method need review.
Options to assess
- A larger sound pallet with the appropriate capacity.
- A purpose-built skid or frame supporting the whole item.
- Disassembly of removable parts where the manufacturer permits it.
- A suitable crate with protected internal supports.
Before booking
Send photographs, dimensions, gross weight and information about lifting points. Explain whether the projection is fragile or load-bearing. The manager can assess the proposed service and any handling restrictions.
