Scanning a signed paper CMR creates a digital copy of that paper record. A compliant e-CMR process concerns how the electronic consignment note is created, authenticated, updated and made available to the relevant parties.

The distinction matters when deciding how the driver, shipper and consignee will record handover and reservations.

What needs to work in practice?

• The route and relevant legal framework must permit the intended use.
• The carrier and other participants need compatible procedures.
• Required consignment information must be available to authorised parties.
• Handover, amendments and observations need an appropriate record.
• The receiving location must know how to complete its part of the process.

Is e-CMR available for every shipment?

Questions to ask before collection

Ask whether the booking uses paper, electronic records or a combination, how the consignee signs and how copies can be obtained. Tell the manager if your business has a required internal document process.
