The consignee should check that the delivered handling units match the shipment and inspect their visible condition before completing the delivery record. This is an operational check at handover, followed by a timely inspection of the contents where appropriate.

Check the visible shipment

  • Count pallets, crates or other units against the delivery record.
  • Check identifiers and destination labels.
  • Look for broken wrapping, crushed corners or damaged bases.
  • Note signs of tipping, leakage, moisture or opened packaging.
  • Identify any missing unit or visibly affected part.

Do not climb onto unsafe loads or open packaging in a way that creates a hazard. Use the site’s safe receiving procedure and appropriate staff.

Record specific exceptions

Write a factual description on the delivery receipt and retain a copy. Photograph the affected area and the whole unit so the images show both detail and context. Where an electronic device is used, ask how the remarks and receipt copy are recorded.

Check contents promptly

External packaging can conceal damage. Open and inspect the goods as soon as reasonably possible using a method that preserves evidence. Report newly discovered damage promptly; an apparently clean exterior does not justify leaving the shipment unchecked for an extended period.

Send the receiving team the booking reference and Cargo Euro Hub contact route before arrival. Clear instructions are particularly useful when the consignee is a different business from the customer who arranged transport.

Read proof of delivery, visible damage and concealed damage.
